Keenan has been taking about Halloween and getting as much candy as he can possibly fit into his bucket for the past three weeks! Since he doesn’t get candy very often (if at all!), he definitely takes full advantage of trick-or-treating. But, Halloween doesn’t have to be the most unhealthy, candy-filled day of the year.
Here are five simple tips that I follow to make the day a healthier one…
5 Tips For a Healthy Halloween
1. The candy isn’t everything! Instead of buying six large bags of candy, I buy three bags and three bags of healthier treats, such as fruit snacks, rice krispie treats and raisins. I combine everything in a large bowl so the candy is mixed in with the healthier things.
2. Forget about it! If we have any candy leftover after the last trick-or-treater has gone, I immediately throw it away or donate it to an office. If it’s in the house, my husband and I will be too tempted to eat it!
3. Indulge wisely. I’m not much of a candy person, but I LOVE reeces pieces peanut butter cups. I allow myself two cups, eating one immediately and saving one for the next day, as a treat to look forward to. If I saved a handful, I would be too tempted to eat them all in one sitting!
4. Healthy treats are good, too! While we pass out candy, I always make sure to have some healthy treats to munch on, such such as popcorn, nuts, trail mix, freshly chopped veggies, fruit or homemade cookies. By having the healthy snacks out, we are all less tempted to indulge in the candy!
5. Don’t sweat the small stuff! If I do indulge in a little more candy than I anticipated, I don’t beat myself up about it. I get back on track with my healthy eating the next day. In the grand scheme of things, a few pieces of candy isn’t going to make or break me!
Questions:
What do you give out to trick-or-treaters on Halloween?
Do you have any tips to add?
Great tips! This year I’m opting to pass out finger flashlights instead of candy. Hoping they are enjoyed by the kiddos and parents!
I love it!
Great ideas! I completely agree about getting rid of all the candy the day following Halloween! Last year, we have away Annie’s graham bunnies and Snyder pretzels. This year, I want to be conscious of giving away nut allergy friendly treats. We know a family with a son with a terrible nut allergy and Halloween poses such a challenge for the boy, his siblings and parents.
I love the bunnies and pretzels! I’ll have to do that next year! That is so true about the nut allergies. You have to be so careful.
We just buy candy (not much) – we usually get less than 20 trick-or-treaters.
Oh, wow, we get about 200 trick-or-treaters at least!
The tips are great and even i agree with you nowadays it has became that candy matters a lot in Halloween. Thanks for sharing the tips.
Thank you! Yes, it’s definitely all about the candy.
We give out candy but switched to the smaller bite sized stuff instead of the larger pieces.
Nice!
Great healthy treat ideas – I’m like the idea of buying fruitsnacks and raisins instead. I really want to make homemade rice krispies with candy corn in them this year!!!
Thanks! Ooh, rice krispie treats with candy corn sounds good!
Great tips. I must’ve been a strange kid because I always preferred rice krispy treats and fruit snacks over the chocolate.
Thanks, Jessie! I preferred fruit snacks, too (except for reeces pieces peanut butter cups)!
