Almost to the weekend!! Even though we have some cleaning and more unpacking/organizing to do, I’m excited for our good friends to visit on Saturday! We haven’t seen them in a few months, so it will be nice to hang out, catch-up and eat yummy food together (I just wish I could enjoy an adult beverage!).
Anyhow, since it’s not the weekend quite yet, I’m anxious to share a new find with you all called Energybits! The folks there reached out to me a few weeks ago and asked if they could send a sample of their bits to review. I had heard of their product from reading other blogs, but I hadn’t tried them, so I gladly accepted their offer!
Energybits are little “bits” (or tablets) filled with 100% spirulina algae. Spirulina is grown in water and is pretty much what I would consider a “power food” because it is packed with so many wonderful vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, electrolytes, omega-3 and protein (in fact, it is considered a complete protein since it contains all nine amino acids). In one ounce of spirulina powder, you get 16 grams of protein! It also contains more beta-carotene than any other whole food and also twelve times more iron than beef liver! Also one tablet contains just one calorie.
Since spirulina packs so much nutrition, it also provides a ton of great health benefits. It helps to lower cholesterol and blood pressure, build lean muscle mass, aid in weight loss, keep hunger at bay, improve athletic performance, stop fatigue and best of all (especially for moms!)…provide physical energy without the crash of chemicals like caffeine. If that didn’t grab your attention, then I don’t know what will! I was certainly sold!
Energybits recommends taking 30 tablets (one adult serving) to provide energy when that afternoon lull rolls around, first thing in the morning to help you get moving (which I can certainly use these days!) or right before a workout. You can also take them to curb hunger, if you are trying to lose weight. Kids can also take them (recommended serving is 10 tablets) for added nutrition and energy.
When I first tried Energybits, I didn’t follow the recommended directions of swallowing the tablets with a glass of water, I just popped them in my mouth and started chewing. Boy, were my mouth and taste buds a little shocked! Energybits doesn’t recommend chewing them because they taste very green, and I can certainly say that they do! They are a little TOO green for my taste! But, after taking them when I was feeling very tired in the afternoon, I noticed my energy level start to improve within minutes of eating them! I didn’t feel jittery, I just felt energized and refreshed the rest of the afternoon. The next time I took them, I actually swallowed them with water first thing in the morning right before my workout. They definitely went down MUCH easier! The bits gave me a nice boost throughout my WOD and the energy continued throughout the day. I can truly say that these little bits work wonders!
I am definitely going to get another tin of bits again, and look into their other bits, especially the recovery ones for helping to get over a cold faster or even prevent them during the winter months. Also, I want to add that these bits are not pills or a supplement. Spirulina is a whole food, so it is real food that you are eating, which makes them perfectly safe to consume for yourself (even if you are pregnant or nursing) and your children.
If you are interested in getting some bits for yourself, you can head on over to Energybits’ website and use the discount code “BLOG” and receive a 10% discount!
Also, Energybits was so generous that they offered to send one lucky reader a gift back that includes a sample tin of their own!
