Happy Hump Day! I hope everyone’s week is going well!
I promised on Monday that would I post the recipe to my homemade baby oatmeal cereal that I made for Mirella last weekend (and what I made for Keenan when he was a baby), so I thought I would share it for this week’s What I Ate Wednesday.
First of all, this recipe is super EASY to make and takes less than 15 minutes from start to finish. The nice thing about the recipe is it makes a large batch so you can freeze the oatmeal in ice cube trays and just take 1-2 cubes (depending on how much your baby eats) out and re-heat in the microwave when you are ready to feed the oatmeal to your child! I made this batch last Saturay and I’ll have enough oatmeal to feed Mirella for a month! It really can’t get any easier than that?!
Ingredients
- 3 1/3 cup oats
- 27.5 oz. breast milk (or you could use 1/2 breast milk and 1/2 water or all water)
- 4 tbsp ground flax seed (optional)
Instructions
- Place raw oats in blender with flax seed and blend until it forms a nice, soft powder (the courser the oats, the thicker and chunkier your oatmeal will be).
- Meanwhile, bring your milk to a boil (or whatever liquid you use) and gradually add your oats, stirring constantly. Return to a boil and reduce heat to medium and let cook for 5 minutes (or until liquid is absorbed), stirring occasionally.
- Remove from heat and pour oatmeal into your ice cube trays, cover with foil, and freeze for 24-48 hours.
- Once frozen, pop out the cubes and place them in a zip-lock bag and store in the freezer. To serve, place 1-2 cubes (depending on how much your baby is eating) in dish and microwave for 30 seconds, mix with spoon and microwave for another 30 seconds until ready to serve. Note: Oatmeal will be very warm, so you might need to add an ice cube or a splash of cold water to cool it down before serving. Also, you can add a dash of cinnamon to the oatmeal for additional flavoring.
Questions:
If you have children, did you make any baby food for them?
What was the first solid food you fed your child/children?
For oatmeal, I just ground the oats in the blender and stored them dry. Then mixed the dry oats with warm water (or breastmilk) just by before feeding. No rewarming,or messing with freezing either. I also made small batches of pureed cooked carrots and peas, etc until he could finger feed small bites.
That is a great idea, Sarah! That would probably be even easier than cooking it ahead of time. I might try your method after we go through this batch!
awesome, Melissa! I have been meaning to make my own since an organic bag of baby oatmeal is around $5 if not on sale 😮 My only question is about the iron, is there something I could add so there’s iron in it?
Your are welcome! I’m not sure about the iron. I’ll have to look into that!
