The past two weeks have seemed like a crazy whirlwind…Halloween, my birthday and our 10 year belated anniversary trip in Cabo (just my hubby and me for the first time since we had Mirella!). We got back last week and I feel like I’ve been playing catch-up ever since, hence the reason I haven’t had time to write a blog post!

Sunset Cruise in Cabo

Cabo was FABULOUS and I already miss it! After being a walnut widow for the past 8 weeks (thanks to walnut harvest), it was so nice to have some uninterrupted, alone time with my husband for 6 days. It was much needed and a great way to celebrate the past 10 years. It was funny, it took us a day to feel like we didn’t have our kids with us, or not be on a “kid schedule.” The first night we both thought we needed to get dinner quickly since the sun was going down shortly after 5:oo p.m., and then it dawned on us that we could have dinner whenever we wanted since we didn’t have the kids with us!

Sunset in Cabo San Lucas

The best thing about our trip was just being a couple…talking, laughing and just having fun like when we first met. We were able to reconnect and truly enjoy each other’s company (not that we don’t on a daily basis, but with the hustle and bustle of life with kids, those moments can be few and far between sometimes). We stayed up late, read A LOT by the pool and on the beach, enjoyed some good drinks (maybe one too many, ha!), ate guacamole and chips for lunch (don’t judge!), danced, went out and met some great people. It was one of the best trips we have taken since before we had kids, and I can’t wait to do it again. We both decided that we are going to do a kid-free trip once a year, even if it’s only for a few days, and of course, our annual family vacation. No matter how much it costs, or how much effort it takes to make sure the kids are taken care of while we are gone, it is so worth it, and much needed to get away as a couple.

Relaxing on the beach in Cabo

Every couple with kids should take a vacation kid-free, or at least get away for a few days, and here are my 5 reasons why…

1. Just the two of you! My husband and I could just be us, two adults, a couple in love, not two parents on 24 hour parent duty. We were able to talk about adult things all day long and truly reconnect. Don’t get me wrong, I love being a mom and I adore my kiddos, but it is nice to have a break every once in a while.

2. Sleep and more sleep! While we were in Cabo, we slept in EVERYDAY and it was great! Well, we couldn’t sleep past 7:30 (our bodies are too wired for getting up early), but to us that was sleeping in! Usually, we are awakened by Keenan standing at our bedside at 7:00 am, or Mirella calling for me at 6:30 am on the weekends.

3. Party like nobody’s business! Well, not exactly, but we went out every night, danced, had a drink or two, and listened to music because we didn’t have to find babysitters, since our kids weren’t with us. I must admit, we did stay out until the wee hours of the morning on one night (WAY past my bedtime, which I paid for the next day), but it was so fun!

4. Schedule, what? Since we didn’t have our kiddos with us, we ate when we wanted and did whatever we wanted. No nap times, no set meal times and no bedtime. It was SO nice to do what we felt like doing, though it was a little weird at first. My body felt like it needed to follow its’ normal schedule and routine, but it adjusted quite well.

5. Meet other adults! While relaxing by the pool or laying out on the beach, we met so many awesome people and had such great conversations, that sometimes lasted for a couple of hours! It was so fun to meet other couples and engage in adult conversations without having to tend to kids!

Though we had a wonderful time on our trip, I missed my kiddos a lot. My husband and I were both ready to come home and give them big hugs and kisses. We are so grateful for our wonderful parents taking such great care of them while we were gone. It was nice to get away, but it was even better to come home to our family refreshed and reconnected to hit life full speed ahead. But, would I do it all over? ABSOLUTELY! In fact, we are already planning our next kid-free trip next Fall after walnut harvest. I recommend every couple take a vacation kid-free to just be yourselves, let loose and reconnect. It’s so vital to have that time together, to be your best selves for your kids and your marriage.

Question:

Have you and your spouse taken a vacation without kids?
